Hair Transplant in Turkey for UK Patients: The Complete Guide
Thinking about a hair transplant in Turkey from the UK? This guide covers flights, entry rules, why GHIC does not apply, insurance, how costs compare with UK clinics, and how aftercare and your GP fit in once you are home.
The UK is one of the largest sources of hair transplant patients in Istanbul. The flight is short, packages are well organised and prices are usually far lower than in UK private clinics. This guide covers what UK patients specifically need to know before travelling.
The short answer
Most UK patients fly to Istanbul in around four hours, stay about three nights and fly home after a check and first wash. Hair transplants for cosmetic reasons are not usually available on the NHS, and UK private clinics often charge many thousands of pounds. Before you go, check the current entry rules on GOV.UK, arrange suitable travel insurance (your GHIC does not cover Turkey), choose a clinic on medical standards first, and agree how follow-up will work once you are home.
Flights from the UK
- Flight time: around three and a half to four hours from London, with direct flights from several other UK airports.
- Airports in Istanbul: Istanbul Airport (IST) is usually the most convenient for our clinic in Şişli on the European side. Some flights use Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, which means a longer transfer.
- Time difference: Istanbul is on GMT+3 all year, so it is two hours ahead of the UK in summer and three hours ahead in winter.
Entry requirements
Check the latest entry requirements for Turkey on GOV.UK’s foreign travel advice before booking. Make sure your passport meets the validity rules for your travel dates.
GHIC, insurance and the NHS
- GHIC and EHIC: these cards do not cover healthcare in Turkey, because Turkey is not part of the scheme.
- Travel insurance: many standard policies exclude planned medical procedures and their complications. Read the policy carefully or look for cover that includes planned treatment abroad.
- NHS: hair transplants for cosmetic reasons are generally not available on the NHS. If you develop a complication at home, the NHS will help in an emergency, but your clinic should remain your first point of contact for routine aftercare questions.
How costs compare with UK clinics
UK private clinics commonly price by session or graft, and a medium-sized procedure often costs between several thousand and fifteen thousand pounds or more. A Turkish package is usually much lower and often includes the hotel, transfers and aftercare products. Flights are normally separate. See our full cost comparison and our prices page.
A typical three-day stay
- Day 1: arrival, hotel transfer, consultation and hairline design with the doctor.
- Day 2: DHI procedure under local anaesthesia, usually 5 to 8 hours.
- Day 3: check, first gentle wash and aftercare plan, then the flight home.
Your GP and aftercare at home
- Tell your GP: especially if you have medical conditions or take regular medicines. Ask the clinic for a written summary of the procedure and any medicines given.
- Remote follow-up: we review photos at key stages, such as two weeks and three, six and twelve months, for a full year.
- Medical treatment: if a treatment such as minoxidil or finasteride is recommended to protect your existing hair, discuss it with a UK-registered prescriber who can monitor you.
- Back to work: many people return to desk work within a week. Ask about sport, sunbathing and swimming before you plan them.
