A clear, doctor-led guide to having a hair transplant in Turkey in 2026: how DHI works, how many grafts you may need, what a typical three-day stay in Istanbul looks like, what it costs, how to stay safe and what to expect month by month.

Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, has become one of the most popular destinations in the world for hair transplant surgery. People travel from the United States, the United Kingdom and across Europe for experienced surgical teams, organised patient services and prices that are usually lower than at home. This guide explains what actually happens, what matters for a good result and what you should check before you book.

The short answer

A hair transplant in Turkey moves healthy hair follicles from the back and sides of your head (the donor area) to areas of thinning or baldness. Most procedures are completed in one day, usually in 5 to 8 hours under local anaesthesia, with a total stay in Istanbul of about three nights. Shedding of the transplanted hairs in the first weeks is normal, new growth usually starts at around three to four months, and the final result is typically seen at 12 to 18 months. The quality of your result depends on the medical team, a realistic plan for your donor area and good aftercare, not on the country itself.

Why so many patients choose Turkey

  • Experience and volume. Istanbul clinics perform a very large number of procedures, so many teams are highly practised in planning, extraction and implantation.
  • Organised patient journeys. Packages often include airport transfers, hotel accommodation, interpreters and aftercare products.
  • Cost. Prices are usually lower than in the USA or the UK because of lower operating costs, not because the medical steps are different.
  • Easy access. Istanbul is a major flight hub, around four hours from London and around ten to eleven hours on direct flights from the US East Coast.

Lower prices also attract clinics that cut corners. That is why the most important decision is the clinic, not the destination. Our 12-point clinic checklist walks you through what to verify.

Techniques: DHI and FUE in plain words

Both modern techniques remove follicles one by one from the donor area, so there is no long linear scar. The difference is mainly in how the grafts are placed.

  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): follicles are extracted individually, the surgeon opens tiny channels in the recipient area, and grafts are then placed into those channels.
  • DHI (Direct Hair Implantation): follicles are also extracted individually, but each graft is loaded into a pen-like implanter and placed directly, controlling the angle, direction and depth of every hair as it goes in.

At Hair in Istanbul we use DHI. It allows precise control of angle and direction, which matters especially for natural hairlines and for curly and afro-textured hair, where the follicle itself is curved beneath the skin.

Are you a good candidate?

A hair transplant redistributes hair you already have. It does not create new follicles. You are more likely to be a good candidate if:

  • your hair loss pattern has stabilised, or is being managed with medical treatment;
  • your donor area at the back and sides is dense enough to supply the grafts you need;
  • you are in good general health and your expectations are realistic.

Very young patients with fast, early hair loss, people with certain scarring or autoimmune hair conditions, and anyone with uncontrolled medical problems may need a different plan or treatment first. A doctor should review your photos and medical history before giving you a number of grafts or a price.

How many grafts might you need?

Graft numbers depend on the size of the area, the density you want and what your donor area can safely provide. As a broad guide, these are the ranges we use when planning:

Area to restoreTypical graft range
Hairline and temples1,500 to 2,500
Front and mid-scalp3,500 to 5,000
Crown1,500 to 3,000
Maximum coverage (where the donor area allows)4,500 to 6,500, sometimes over two sessions

Be cautious of any clinic that promises a very high graft number without examining your donor area. Over-harvesting can leave the back of the head visibly thin, and that cannot be undone.

A typical three-day stay in Istanbul

  1. Day 1, arrival: airport transfer to your hotel, then a consultation, blood tests where needed and hairline design with the doctor.
  2. Day 2, procedure: local anaesthesia, extraction and DHI implantation, usually 5 to 8 hours with breaks. Most patients rest or watch films during the procedure.
  3. Day 3, check and first wash: the team checks the donor and recipient areas, performs the first gentle wash and explains your aftercare plan before you fly home.

Recovery: what to expect month by month

Time after surgeryWhat is normal
Days 1 to 3Mild swelling of the forehead, tenderness in the donor area
Days 7 to 14Small crusts loosen and fall away with gentle washing
Weeks 2 to 6Many transplanted hairs shed. This is expected and the follicles stay in place
Months 3 to 4New hairs begin to grow, often fine at first
Month 6Clear visible improvement for most patients
Months 12 to 18Final density and texture; the crown can take longest

Safety: what a responsible clinic does

Hair transplantation is surgery and carries real, if usually manageable, risks such as swelling, infection, temporary numbness, folliculitis and poor growth. A responsible clinic is a licensed medical facility, reviews your health before surgery, tells you clearly which steps a doctor performs, uses sterile single-use materials and stays in contact for at least 12 months. What does it cost?

Prices in Turkey are generally lower than in the USA or the UK, but they vary with the technique, graft number and what the package includes. See our cost comparison for Turkey, the USA and the UK and our prices page. Always ask for a written quote that lists exactly what is included.

How to start

Send clear photos of your front, top, crown and donor area, tell us about any medical conditions and medications, and our medical team will review them. You will receive a realistic plan, a graft estimate and a written quote. When you are ready, you can book your operation date.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hair transplant in Turkey take?

The procedure itself usually takes 5 to 8 hours in one day under local anaesthesia. Most patients stay in Istanbul for about three nights in total.

When will I see results?

Transplanted hairs often shed in the first weeks. New growth usually starts at three to four months, most patients see a clear improvement by six months, and the final result is typically seen at 12 to 18 months.

Which technique does Hair in Istanbul use?

We use DHI (Direct Hair Implantation), which places each graft with a pen-like implanter and gives precise control of angle, direction and depth.

Is a hair transplant permanent?

Hairs taken from the donor area are usually resistant to the type of hair loss that affects the top of the head, so transplanted hair tends to last. Your existing non-transplanted hair can still thin over time, which is why medical treatment is sometimes recommended alongside surgery.
