Planning a hair transplant in Istanbul from the United States? This guide covers flights and time zones, entry requirements, how long to stay, what you will pay, insurance, and how aftercare works once you are back home.

More Americans are travelling to Istanbul for hair restoration. The main reasons are cost, the experience of Istanbul’s surgical teams and the convenience of all-inclusive packages. The journey is longer than a European trip, so good planning makes a real difference. This guide is written for patients travelling from the USA.

The short answer

Most US patients fly to Istanbul, have a consultation on arrival, the procedure the next day and a check with the first wash on the third day, then fly home. Plan three to four nights in Istanbul. Direct flights from major US hubs take around ten to eleven hours. A hair transplant package in Turkey usually costs much less than a comparable procedure in the USA, but you should choose a clinic on medical standards first, and arrange how follow-up will work after you return home.

Flights and time difference

  • Airports: Istanbul has two international airports, Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. Our clinic in Şişli is on the European side, so IST is usually more convenient.
  • Flight time: direct flights from cities such as New York, Chicago, Miami or Los Angeles typically take around ten to thirteen hours.
  • Time zone: Istanbul uses GMT+3 all year. It is usually seven or eight hours ahead of New York, depending on US daylight saving time.
  • Jet lag: arriving a day early helps you rest before your consultation.

Entry requirements

Entry rules for US citizens have changed in recent years. Check the current requirements on the official Turkish e-Visa website and the US State Department’s travel information before you book. Make sure your passport is valid for at least several months beyond your travel dates.

How long should you stay?

  1. Day 1: arrival, transfer to the hotel, consultation and hairline design.
  2. Day 2: procedure with DHI, usually 5 to 8 hours under local anaesthesia.
  3. Day 3: check, first wash and aftercare instructions.
  4. Day 4 (optional): an extra rest day before the long flight home, which many US patients prefer.

What will it cost?

In the USA, hair transplants are commonly priced per graft or per session, and a medium-sized procedure often costs well over ten thousand dollars. Packages in Turkey are usually far lower and often include the hotel, transfers and aftercare products. Flights are normally separate. Read our cost comparison for Turkey, the USA and the UK and see our prices page.

Paying and currency

  • Clinics usually quote in US dollars or euros, so you know the cost in advance.
  • Ask for a written quote that lists everything included, and how any deposit works.
  • Tell your bank you are travelling so card payments are not blocked.

Insurance

US health insurance plans normally do not cover cosmetic hair transplants, at home or abroad. Standard travel insurance often excludes planned medical procedures too. Ask your insurer what is covered, and consider a policy that includes complications from planned treatment abroad if one is available to you.

Aftercare once you are back in the USA

  • Remote follow-up: we ask for photos at key stages, such as two weeks and three, six and twelve months, and a doctor reviews them.
  • Your local doctor: it is helpful to tell your primary care physician or a dermatologist about your procedure, especially if you take other medicines.
  • Medical treatment: if a medicine such as minoxidil or finasteride is recommended to protect your existing hair, discuss it with a US-licensed doctor, who can prescribe and monitor it locally.

Afro-textured and curly hair

Many of our US patients have afro-textured or tightly curled hair. Curved follicles need slower, more careful extraction and implantation. If this applies to you, read our page on afro hair transplants in Turkey.

Choosing the right clinic

Distance makes the choice even more important, because you cannot easily pop back for a check. Use our 12-point clinic checklist and our guide to hair transplant safety in Turkey.

Next step

Send photos of your front, top, crown and donor area. Our medical team will reply with a realistic plan and a written quote, and our coordinators can help you choose dates that fit your flights. When you are ready, you can book your operation date.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Istanbul for a hair transplant?

Most US patients stay three to four nights: arrival and consultation, the procedure, then a check and first wash. An extra rest day before the long flight is often helpful.

Do US citizens need a visa for Turkey?

Entry rules have changed in recent years, so check the official Turkish e-Visa website and the US State Department’s travel information before you book.

Will my US health insurance cover a hair transplant in Turkey?

Usually not, because hair transplants are considered cosmetic. Check with your insurer and review whether your travel insurance covers complications from planned treatment.

How does follow-up work once I am back in the USA?

We follow up remotely with photos at key stages for 12 months, and a doctor reviews them. It also helps to tell your local doctor about your procedure.
